China's grid investment numbers tell a clear story. State Grid Corporation completed more than 310 billion yuan in fixed-asset investment in the first half of 2026, up 12.6 percent year on year . For the full "15th Five-Year Plan" period, State Grid plans to invest about 4 trillion yuan, a 40 percent increase from the previous cycle . China Southern Power Grid has set a 180 billion yuan budget for 2026 alone . Combined, the two utilities are expected to invest close to 5 trillion yuan over five years .

What is driving this spending? Several factors.

AI data centers are a major force. Global data center electricity consumption is projected to more than double by 2030 . In the U.S., utilities plan approximately $138 billion in transmission investment from 2026 to 2028, roughly double the average annual rate of the previous nine years . Analysts have called data centers "the closest thing to a silver bullet" for transmission investment .

The commercial and industrial segment is also growing fast. Newton-Evans estimates that C&I buyers now account for about 36 percent of the U.S. medium voltage equipment market, driven by data centers, business campuses, and industrial reshoring . Substation automation spending is expected to exceed $3.8 billion in 2026, rising to $4.2 billion by 2028 .

Technology is changing how power systems are built. HVDC transmission is gaining traction for long-distance power delivery. Nine HVDC projects in the U.S. are valued at around $45-50 billion . Leading suppliers include Hitachi Energy and Siemens Energy . Solid-state transformers are emerging as a new technology for AI data centers, with Chinese manufacturers positioning for the shift .

On the renewable side, State Grid connected 1.55 billion kilowatts of wind and solar capacity in the first half of 2026 . The company also operates 76 pumped-storage stations, with managed capacity exceeding 95 million kilowatts .

China is making progress on UHV transmission. The Shaanbei-Anhui ±800 kV UHV DC project entered operation, expanding the corridor that delivers clean energy from the northwest to eastern load centers. Grid-connected wind and solar within State Grid's service areas reached 1.55 billion kilowatts by end-June.

The U.S. market is also heating up. FMI projects annual U.S. power construction spending will grow from $158 billion in 2025 to $255 billion in 2030 . Transmission and distribution spending is expected to exceed $500 billion through 2030 . Thermal generation is the fastest-growing segment at 13.7 percent CAGR, driven by demand from data centers and industrial users .

New York's grid operator warns that generator retirements are outpacing new supply, narrowing the system's margin for error during stress periods . The report calls for an "all-of-the-above" investment approach .

For equipment manufacturers, the outlook is positive. Transformer and switchgear suppliers are seeing strong order activity. In China, the third round of State Grid's 2026 tenders saw over 6.3 billion yuan in awards to domestic suppliers . Domestic manufacturers are also looking overseas, with transformer exports growing over 40 percent in early 2026.

The electric power system is entering a new investment cycle. Grid upgrades, AI-driven demand, and renewable integration are all pushing the sector forward. Companies that can supply high-voltage equipment, automation systems, and new technologies like SST will be well positioned.

Established in March 1999, SUMEC International Technology Co. Ltd. is the core backbone of SUMEC Group Corporation, which is subordinate to China National Machinery Industry Corporation (Sinomach). Sinomach is one of the important state-owned backbone enterprises directly managed by the central government and ranked 284th in the world top 500 in 2021.
